The Seimas prolongs the effect of law amendments giving additional authorization to military personnel in emergencies by 3 more months

On January 18 the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania prolonged the effect of amendments to the Law on the Organization of National Defence and Military Service and to the Statute on the Use of Military Force in light of the need for a reliable protection of the state border and the Lithuanian Armed Forces’ assistance to the State Border Guard Service. The amendments to the law establish a legal mechanism to give military personnel authority concerning non-subordinate persons.

NATO’s military capabilities in the Baltic region are enhanced as of this January. The Danish Parliament has decided this week to send additional four fighter aircraft to Lithuania and its HDMS Peter Willemoes frigate with a crew of 160 aboard to the Baltic Sea.

“The security of Europe cannot be seen separately from the security of Ukraine,” says Minister of National Defence Arvydas Anušauskas, in attendance at the informal European Union Defence Ministers meeting in France on January 12 – 13. The Ministers are convening in Brest on the decisions to be taken in the light of the deteriorating security situation in Europe, especially with regard to the situation by Ukraine’s borders.
