Lietuvos karinių jūrų pajėgų laivas „Šakiai

Liepos 27 d. Lietuvos karinių jūrų pajėgų laivas „Šakiai" dalyvauja tarptautinėse paieškos ir gelbėjimo bei taršos likvidavimo pratybose „RU-POL-LIT SAREX 2010", kurios vyksta pietrytinėje Baltijos jūros dalyje. Pratybas organizuoja ir koordinuoja Rusijos Kaliningrado paieškos ir gelbėjimo centras. Jose dalyvauja 11 laivų ir keturi orlaiviai iš Lenkijos, Lietuvos ir Rusijos.

Units of the Lithuanian Armed Forces finished half-year's standby in NATO and EU forces

June 30, half year duty of units of the Lithuanian Armed Forces in NATO Response Force and the EU Battle Group ended.


As of 1 January 2010 about 600 of Lithuanian military personnel, mostly from the Lithuanian Grand Duke Algirdas Mechanised Infantry Battalion where assigned for duty in the Land Component of the NATO Response Force (NRF-14). Lithuanian soldiers were deployed in the trilateral Baltic Battalion (BALTBAT).


Another 130 soldiers majority of whom come from King Mindaugas Mechanised Infantry Battalion performed standby in the EU Battle Group (BG) together with troops from Poland, Latvia, Slovakia, and Germany.

Outgoing US Naval Attaché awarded with the Medal of Merit
imgJune 23, farewell ceremony for the outgoing US Naval Attaché in Lithuania Cdr Tomas Algirdas Alksninis was held at the Ministry of National Defence. Vice Minister of National Defence Vytautas Umbrasas bestowed the Medal of Merit of the National Defence System on Cdr T. A. Alksninis for personal contribution and merits to development of cooperation between the Lithuanian and US Armed Forces.


HE US Ambassador in Lithuania Anne Ellizabeth Derse, US Defence and Army Attaché in Lithuania Lt Col David B. Millner, representatives of the Ministry of National Defence and Armed Forces participated in the ceremony.

Representatives of NATO forces and Afghan National Army visited Ghor
imgJune 17, Lt. Gen. David M. Rodriguez, Commander of the ISAF Joint Command, Brig. Gen. Claudio Berto, Commander of the ISAF Regional Command West, and Chief of ANA General Staff Gen. Bismullah Khan visited camp of the Lithuanian-led Chaghcharan Provincial Reconstruction Team in Ghor province, Afghanistan.


In a meeting with Commander PRT-11 Lt. Col. Gintaras Smaliukas high-ranking guests discussed security situation in the province, challenges faced in Ghor province, and cooperation of ISAF and local forces to the end of ensuring security. In Ghor high officers also met with heads of local police and National Security Department of Afghanistan.

Five years for restored peace and stability in Afghanistan

Recently the 10th rotation of the Lithuania-led Provincial Reconstruction Team of Ghor province (PRT-10), Afghanistan, was re-deployed to Lithuania. The shift was based on military personnel of the 1st Territorial Unit of Dainava Military District of the Lithuanian National Defence Volunteer Force. At present troops of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Kęstutis Motorised Infantry Battalion of the Motorised Infantry Brigade „Iron Wolf", and other divisions of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, perform tasks in the biggest and the most important international mission Lithuania contributes to as PRT-11.


 Lithuania deploys military and diplomatic personnel to Ghor on the basis of half-year duty periods for the latter five years. The significance of the mission to Lithuania rests not only with a relatively large number of involved personnel but also with the amount of responsibility. Our country has committed to lead and coordinate the reconstruction process in Ghor, one of the 34 provinces of Afghanistan, whose area is close to the size of France (around 647 500 km²). Staff of the Provincial Reconstruction Team Lithuania maintains in the province includes military and civilian representatives of Denmark, Georgia, Japan, the United States, Romania and Ukraine, together with around 150 military and civilian personnel from Lithuania.

Three cadets of the Lithuanian Military Academy won scholarships in prestigious US military service academies
imgJune 16, certificates of scholarships established by the United States for studies in prestigious US military academies were presented to three cadets of Gen. Jonas Žemaitis Lithuanian Military Academy. During the ceremony the cadets were congratulated by the US Ambassador Anne E. Derse, Commandant of the Military Academy Col. Gintaras Bagdonas, relatives of the cadets, and other guests.


Three cadets of the Lithuanian Military Academy - 3rd year cadet Vytautas Drejeris and 2nd year cadets Saulius Gauronskis and Giedrius Mikalauskas - will study at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis (Maryland), the United States Military Academy at West Point (State New York) and the United States Coast Guard Academy (New London, Connecticut) respectively. Lithuanian cadets are among the 32 international students who have been selected for scholarship in the mentioned prestigious military education institutions. The total of 120 states were invited to recommend their candidates for studies in the US military academies.

Representatives of National Defence System will take part in international conference on cyber conflict in Tallinn

Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania will delegate two representatives of Communication and Information Systems Service under MoND to the international conference on cyber conflict hosted by Tallinn (Estonia) on June 16-18.


More than 250 specialists representing governmental, business or academic sectors of various countries will address strategic, technical and legal aspects of cyber security.


The strategic session will analyse correlation between demonstration of national power and ensurment of national security in cyber space, discuss impact of cyber attacks staged by non-governmental actors on cyber security of states, and study features of cyber conflicts. In the technical session technical equipment and solutions used to arrange cyber attacks and technical protection (defence) means invoked to counter them will be identified. In the juridical-political session experts will look into international political and juridical initiatives in cyber security and their effect on national initiatives to strengthen cyber defence.

Minister of National Defence of Poland will visit Lithuania
imgJune 16, National Defence Minister of Poland Bogdan Klich with delegation will begin a two-day work visit in Lithuania.


The guest will meet with the Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė, and with the Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius at the Government of the Republic of Lithuania, meeting of the delegation with Arvydas Anušauskas, Chair of the Committee on National Security and Defence of the Republic of Lithuania is planned during which Chie of Defence of Lithuania Maj. Gen. Arvydas Pocius will also be present.


In the end of the meeting a revised version of bilateral cooperation agreement will be signed that was first approved in 2001.

Chief of Defence of Lithuania will participate in a conference in Helsinki
imgChief of Defence of Lithuania Maj. Gen. Arvydas Pocius will take part in a conference "NATO's New Strategic Concept: NATO and the Partners' Military Perspective" hosted by Helsinki (Finland) on June 14-15.


In the conference the progress in drafting the new NATO's Strategic Concept will be addressed. Supreme Allied Commander Transformation (SACT) will take into account findings of the event in producing military advice to the NATO's political and military leadership, Allied Command Transformation (ACT) will use them in its transformational efforts.

Commander of the Lithuanian Land Force will attend annual NATO conference in Croatia
imgJune 15, Commander of the Lithuanian Land Force Brig. Gen. Jonas Vytautas Žukas will participate in the fifth annual NATO Land Force Commanders' Conference 2010 hosted by Zagreb, Croatia.


On the first day of the conference Commanders of Land Forces of NATO members will discuss NATO's role in the XXI century, the new structure of NATO's command, and NATO transformation. Military operations in Afghanistan will also be in focus.
