Participants of multinational exercise „Baltic Spirit 2010 2010.09.01
  Maritime phase of the international mine clearance exercise „Open Spirit 2010" that began on August 30 is in progress. On August 31 „L'aigle" of the French Naval Forces joined the operation, all the 16 ships planned to take part in the exercise and three underwater teams carry out intense activities in the region of „Open Spirit 2010" operation looking for naval mines remaining from WWI, WWII and the postwar period on the Baltic seafloor.
Belgian „Aster" and Polish „Flaming" mine hunters and sweepers reported a mine anchor of a WWII-dated German naval mine each. (A mine anchor is carriage that is dumped from a ship together with the mine that serves as a mine's anchor once it has reached the seafloor.) |

Adjutant General of the Pennsylvania National Guard Maj Gen J. L. Wright visits Lithuania 2010.08.31
 August 31-September 4, Adjutant General of the US Pennsylvania National Guard Maj Gen Jessica L. Wright will pay a work visit in Lithuania by invitation of the Chief of Joint Staff of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Brig Gen Algis Vaičeliūnas.
During the visit US General will meet with the Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė, Chief of Defence of Lithuania Maj Gen Arvydas Pocius, Chief of Joint Staff Brig Gen Algis Vaičeliūnas, Commander Lithuania Air Force Brig Gen Artūras Leita, Commander Lithuanian Land Force Maj Gen Jonas Vytautas Žukas, Commander Lithuanian National Defence Volunteer Forces Col Romualdas Moldaris, Commander of the Lithuanian Riflemen's Union Col Antanas Plieskis. |

Minister of National Defence extended condolence to her Estonian counterpart for the soldier killed in Afghanistan 2010.08.31
On August 31 Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė expressed sympathies in a telephone conversation with the Estonian Defence Minister Jaak Aaviksoo for Estonian Sgt Herdis Sikka killed in Afghanistan. |

An identified type of explosive detonated under the Lithuanian PRT truck in Ghor during patrol 2010.08.30
 August 30, Lithuanian troops drove over an identified type of explosive device during a night patrol in Ghor just several kilometres away from the Lithuanian-led PRT camp. Personnel did not suffer injures in the explosion; the military truck is out of service.
Afghan National Security Forces were informed about the event. Investigation is opened to identify the explosive.
„Lithuanian troops conducted a usual patrol around Chaghcharan as an ordinary means of ensuring security of the PRT camp. According to our estimation, it was an improvised explosive device, and more exact assessment will come after the investigation", said Commander PRT-11 Col Gintaras Smaliukas. |

Finland is a good example for Lithuania in national defence sector, Lithuanian Defence Minister says 2010.08.27
 August 25-26, Minister Rasa Juknevičienė conducted a work visit in Finland where she met with Finland's Defence Minister of Finland Jyri Häkämies, Chief of Defence Lt Gen Ari Puheloinen and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence Kari Rimpi.
In a bilateral meeting Ministers agreed to strengthen Baltic-Nordic cooperation in ensuring regional security and searching for more efficient ways of exploiting limited resources. Specific areas of practical cooperation were planned to be determined before the upcoming Baltic-Nordic Defence Ministers' meeting to be held in November. Joint efforts in countering challenges to cyber defence were named as one of optional priorities. In the future Lithuania would also consider the possibility of joining the Nordic Battlegroup (NBG); Estonia already takes part in the formation and Latvia has also expressed will to take part in it. Defence Minister of Finland stressed the energy security centre to be opened in Lithuania in 2011 as one more critical sector of cooperation. |

12th rotation of Provincial Reconstruction Team on pre-mission training hold tactical field exercise 2010.08.26
 August 23-26, Lithuanian Grand Duke Algirdas Mechanised Infantry Battalion (Jonavos Distr., Rukla) hosts field tactical exercise „Wolves' Training" of units of the 12th shift of Chaghcharan Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT-12) on pre-mission training.
The exercise is tailored to improve procedures of commanding units, train warfare kills of troops before international deployment, completion of collective tasks. |

US Air Contingent readying to take over NATO Baltic Air-policing mission 2010.08.25
 August 25, four F-15C Eagle of the US Air Forces Europe will land in Šiauliai Airbase of the Lithuanian Air Force. US Air Contingent will replace the present rotation of troops of the Polish Air Force on the NATO Baltic Air-policing mission on September 1.

Minister of National Defence will conduct work visit in Finland 2010.08.24
 August 25-26, Minister Rasa Juknevičienė will conduct a work visit in Finland where she will meet with Finland's Defence Minister Jyri Häkämies, Chief of Defence Lt Gen Ari Puheloinen and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence Kari Rimpi.
In bilateral format leading defence officials will address international security situation, crisis management operations, EU security and defence policy, defence affairs in the context of financial crisis, and Nordic-Baltic cooperation.
Minister Rasa Juknevičienė will be briefed on Finland's concept of comprehensive approach to defence encompassing close cooperation between defence and private sectors including voluntary initiatives of citizens. Joint responsibility, concentration and cooperation are joined to the end of ensured Finland's sovereignty, welfare of citizens and security from external as well as other threats. The Minister will also tour units of the Finnish Defence Forces, familiarize with recruit and reserve training systems. |

International pollution incident response exercise BALEX DELTA 2010 held in the Baltic Sea 2010.08.20
 August 23-25, Lithuania will host annual international pollution incident response exercise BALEX DELTA 2010 in its territorial waters and exclusive economic zone in the Baltic Sea. The exercise was initiated by the Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission/Helsinki Commission (HELCOM).
This year the training event is organized and conducted by the Lithuanian Naval Force's (LNF) Maritime Rescue and Coordination Centre. It will be attended by 10 pollution response ships from 8 HELCOM member states: Denmark, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, and Sweden. Lithuania will be represented by LNF ship „Šakiai", ship of European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) and Mi-8 of the Lithuanian Air Force.
BALTIC DELTA 2010 will be assessed by a board of Lithuanian, Latvian and Danish representatives. 30 observers sent by organizations for pollution observation, elimination and maritime safety of various countries of Europe will also attend. |

Staff personnel of the Motorised Infantry Brigade „Iron Wolf 2010.08.20
 August 23-27, staff personnel of the Motorised Infantry Brigade „Iron Wolf " and troops of Gen Romualdas Giedraitis Artillery Battalion of the Lithuanian Armed Forces will take part in territory reconnaissance exercise „Blue Knight" organized by the Danish Division in Germany. Lithuanian personnel will train together with staff officers from Estonia, Latvia, and the Danish Division.
Territorial reconnaissance exercise is a successive part of Brigade's training. The event will involve thorough reconnaissance of territory and application of the collected data for amending initial plans of staff operations of „Iron Wolf" drawn during the preceding exercises „Errant Knight" and „Red Knight". |
