The three-day defence and technologies development camp (hackathon) DELTA NAVY surpassed all expectations. Having wrapped October 27 at the Lithuanian Navy in Klaipėda, it resulted in creation of such product prototypes as a laser communication system for ships at sea, drone, and personnel, and human resources management systems, over the 48 hours of the event aboard LNS Jotvingis headquarters and supply ship.

“Only united actions of all allies and partners will reach our goals in all the missions and operations of the Alliance, including victories in the fight against ISIL. We support only a political resolution to the crisis in Syria and we will remain to be active participants of the coalition against terrorism,” Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis stated at the NATO Defence Ministers meeting in Brussels on October 24. The main session of the day concerned international missions and operations during which the Ministers discussed security situation in the Middle East, including Syria.

“Lithuania firmly upholds the commitment to allot at least 2 percent of GDP for defence and has all mechanisms in place that will ensure additional national defence funding if the economy grows at a faster pace than forecasted,” Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis said at the NATO Defence Ministers meeting in Brussels today. Burden-sharing will be high on the agenda of the NATO Summit in London on December 3–4 later this year, therefore preparation for it by ensuring that the decisions on defence funding commitment taken in Wales are implemented, was among the most topical themes of this NATO Defence Ministers’ meeting.

“Lithuania has a direct interest in securing the independence and territorial integrity of Belarus, as well as in extending the economic cooperation. Therefore I can say for certain that the sovereignty of Belarus is not under military or any other type of a threat - from the West,” Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis says responding to the reaction of Belarus to the deployment of the U.S battalion in Lithuania. “The battalion-sized unit which has been deployed in Lithuania until spring simply does not present any threat to Belarus, we really hope our neighbour’s reaction will be balanced.”

On October 23–24 Vice Minister of National Defence Edvinas Kerza met with Undersecretary of State for Defence Angelo Tofalo during a formal visit to Italy and discussed cooperation on development of cyber rapid response force. Italy is planned to sign a political declaration and join the Lithuanian-led PESCO project in the nearest future.

Baltic Ministers of Defence signed an agreement on strengthening joint airspace surveillance in Brussels

As soon as next year security in the Baltic airspace will be ensured by three control and reporting centres, triple the amount of the current capability. It has been laid out in an agreement of the three Baltic Defence Ministers signed in Brussels on the new configuration of the Baltic Air Surveillance Network and Control System, BALTNET, earlier today.
