Bilateral military cooperation of Lithuania and Moldova discussed

On January 27–28 representatives of the Ministry of National Defence and the Ministry of Defence of Moldova held consultations in Vilnius and signed a bilateral cooperation plan for 2020. The officials also discussed security situation in the neighbouring regions, development of armed forces, prospects of the Lithuanian-Moldovan cooperation.

The European Union's first project Ocean 2020 integrating all European military research enhancing security in the Mediterranean and the Baltic Sea will be continued in 2020. The first phase of the project took place in the Mediterranean and next year it will be implemented in the Baltic Sea. This project involves the Naval Force of the Lithuanian Armed Forces and the Baltic Institute of Advanced Technology (BPTI). In 2019, they conducted unique tests of communications technology in the Baltic Sea to facilitate the provision of real-time information on the marine environment from drones moving in the air, on the water and underneath it. It was part of this EU project Ocean 2020 intended for development of naval innovations.

On December 23–29 NATO fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were not scrambled to identify and escort military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

On December 30 Danish Air Force Detachment was farewelled after completing their rotation of the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states at a ceremony at the Lithuanian Air Force Base in Šiauliai. They were guarding the Baltic airspace with Belgian colleagues from September. Denmark had four back-up F-16 fighter aircraft deployed at Šiauliai Airbase.

On December 16–22 NATO fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states carried out two alert scrambles to identify and escort military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

Joint procurement will provide gasmasks to Lithuanian and Latvian military personnel

On December 12 the Defence Materiel Agency under the Ministry of National Defence signed a contract with Scott Health & Safety Ltd of the United Kingdom in order to supply the Lithuanian Armed Forces with NBC gasmasks. The public tender was entered by three suppliers. Before that, a contract with Scott Health & Safety Ltd was signed on September 17 on procurement of filters for gasmasks, seven bids had been placed in the tender.

Lithuanian military personnel to serve in 11 international operations

Today the Seimas approved that in 2020–2021 Lithuanian soldiers will be deployed to 11 international missions and operations. Lithuanians will continue service in 10 of the ongoing operations and join one more – international maritime security operation in the Straight of Hurmuz. The Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania agreed to the deployment of Lithuanian military personnel to the operation in the Straight of Hurmuz in response to the request of the United States to of America to contribute staff personnel to the coalition-led operation. Up to five Lithuanian soldiers are planned to be deployed.

New Air Surveillance Network and Defence System inaugurated in Karmėlava

As of 1 January 2020 security of the Baltic airspace will be ensured by three Command and Reporting Centers designed for specific national airspace surveillance, based in Tallinn, Lielvarde, and Karmėlava, instead of one joint unit. It will enhance capabilities of NATO’s Integrated Air and Missile Defence System, regional interoperability, and reliability of protection of the Alliance airspace. On December 19 the new BALTNET (Baltic Air Surveillance Network and Control System) configuration and three national centers in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia were inaugurated at a ceremony in Kaunas.

On December 16 informal consultations regarding possibility and prospects for better efficiency of using the joint military unit, Great Hetman Konstantinas Ostrogiškis Brigade, LITPOLUKRBRIG, for strengthening the Armed Forces of Ukraine and bringing in NATO standards and procedures were discussed in Vilnius at the Head of Department of Lithuanian, Polish and Ukrainian Ministries of Defence level. Representatives of the Ministries of Defence of the three countries also addressed regional security and agreed to hold consultations of such character in the future.

On December 16 Vice Minister of National Defence Eimutis Misiūnas met with Chief of Defence of the Bundeswehr Lieutenant General Eberhard Zorn. Vice Minister E. Misiūnas thanked Germany for the contribution to the security in the Baltic region and assistance to the Lithuanian Armed Forces, leadership in the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group Lithuania, investments to military infrastructure in Lithuania
