Lithuanian Land Force Commander to visit Lithuanian troops deployed to Iraq

On Monday, 30 May Commander of the Lithuanian Land Force, Brigadier General Arvydas Pocius will be in Iraq, where he is to visit Lithuanian troops deployed to serve  as part of the Polish-led multinational division there.

While in Iraq, the Lithuanian Land Force Commander is scheduled to visit troops of the Lithuanian Detachment, LITDET-4, deployed to the coalition force base-camp, stationed at the city of Al-Hillah in theProvince of Babylon and meet with Lithuanian military officers serving their appointments at various multinational commands in Iraq. Brigadier General Pocius is also scheduled to meet with Commander of the Multinational Division, Major General W. Skrzypczak, Commander of the Multinational Brigade, Brigadier General P. Lamla, and Commander of the Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel P. Zabkowski. During the meetings, the Lithuanian Land Force Commander will be briefed on the current situation in Iraq

Change of Command to take place at the Iron Wolf Brigade

On Friday, 20 May an official change-of-command ceremony will be held at the Motorised Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf. The outgoing Commander of the Brigade Lieutenant Colonel Gediminas Jurgutis, who has served in this capacity since April 2003, will hand over the unit flag and command insignia to the incoming Commander Lieutenant Colonel Darius Užkuraitis.

With effect from June, Lieutenant Colonel Jurgutis will commence a year-long strategic level studies at the US War College. Before the start of the official change-of-command ceremony, Lieutenant Colonel Jurgutis will be promoted to the rank of Colonel.

Lithuanian National Defence Minister Gediminas Kirkilas met with EU Special Representative in Afghanistan

On Thursday, 19 May the EU Special Representative in Afghanistan Francesc Vendrell at a  meeting with the Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Gediminas Kirkilas thanked for Lithuania's efforts to actively contribute to the restoration of Afghanistan.

"I had to come to Lithuania because I highly appreciate your undertaking to lead the Provincial Reconstruction Team in Afghanistan and I always set Lithuania as an example when I speak with other small countries of the European Union," said Ambassador Vendrell.


According to the Ambassador, introduction of the Lithuania-led Provincial Reconstruction Team in the Afghan Province of Ghor is very welcome and of great importance, because it will assist in ensuring stability and security in the region during the upcoming historic elections in Afghanistan which is scheduled to take place in September later this year.

National Defence System's personnel to represent Lithuania at Eurovision Song Contest

On Thursday, 19 May the semifinal of the 2005 Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Kiev, Ukraine, where the group "Laura & The Lovers" will be representing Lithuania with the song "Little by Little". Laura, the group's soloist, and Martynas, the drummer of the "Lovers", are members of the Lithuanian National Defence Sysytem. Laura Cepukaite works at the Section of Public Relations of the Military Enrollment Administration Service under the Ministry of National Defence, while Martynas Lukosevicius serves with the Honour Guard Company Band of the Motorised Infantry Brigade, Lithuanian Armed Forces (Band Director-Major Justinas Jonusas).

Commander of the Lithuanian Air Force visiting Polish Air Force

On 17-18 May Commander of the Lithuanian Air Force, Colonel Jonas Marcinkus, and him accompanying delegation is visiting the Polish Air Force. The visit is being conducted at the invitation of the Polish Air Force Commander Lieutenant General S. Targosz. This is a return visit of the Lithuanian Air Force to Poland. The Polish Air Force Commander was on a visit to Lithuania on 28 February -1 March.

Letter of Intent concerning establishment of POLUKRLITBAT signed in Kiev

On Tuesday, 10 May, in Kiev,  a Letter of Intent concerning the establishment of a trilateral peacekeeping battalion POLUKRLITBAT for performance in Kosovo was signed.


The Letter of Intent was signed by the Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Gediminas Kirkilas, who is currently with an official visit to Ukraine, and the Ukrainian Minister of Defence, Anatolij Gricenko. "By signing the Letter of Intent, Lithuania has made the first step towards the concentration of military capabilities in the Balkans, and for Ukraine it will serve as an excellent experience of military co-operation with two NATO member states," said the Lithuanian Minister of National Defence after the signing of the document.


The Letter of Intent on the establishment of POLUKRLITBAT will have to be signed by the Polish Minister of Defence as well.

Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces to attend a meeting of NATO Chiefs of Defence in Brussels

On Tuesday, 11 May Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Major General Valdas Tutkus will attend a two-day meeting of NATO Chiefs of Defence, which will be held at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. The meeting will focus on issues covering NATO reforms, operations, and generation of forces. Projects with regard to air policing mission in the Baltic States will also be presented.

On Wednesday, 12 May the Lithuanian Chief of Defence Major General Valdas Tutkus will take part in a meeting with the NATO Secretary General Mr Jaap de Hoop Scheffer. During the meeting the Secretary General will present the vision of NATO Headquarters Reform.

Major General Valdas Tutkus is expected back to Vilnius on Thursday, 12 May.
