Lithuanian Armed Forces in 2006: figures and trends

In 2006 the total ceiling number of servicemen and cadets serving in the National Defence System will stand at 18,250.

The strength of the Lithuanian Armed Forces in 2006 will be the same as in 2005 and will stand at 7,800 professional soldiers, whereof the number of Generals and Admirals - up to 8, Colonels and Naval Captains – up to 32, Lieutenant Colonels and Commanders - up to 115, and Majors and Lieutenant Commanders – up to 310.

The number of conscripts in 2006 will be cut from 3,500 up to 3,210 persons and the number of cadets' will fall from 350 to 240 persons, while the number of volunteer servicemen and other soldiers of the active reserve will be reduced from 8,000 to 7,000 persons.

In comparison to 2005, the total number of servicemen and cadets serving in the Lithuanian National Defence System in 2006 has been reduced by some 1,400 servicemen.

The total ceiling number of civil statute public servants serving in the Lithuanian National Defence System will stand at up to 170.

Ceiling numbers of persons serving in the National Defence System were approved by the Seimas (Parliament) of the Republic of Lithuania on 22 December 2005 upon the adoption of the law on the principal structure of the Lithuanian Armed Forces in 2006, outlining of the organisational structure of the planned principle structure in the 2011 and the ceiling number of statute public servants accomplishing the civil national defence service.

It is planned that in 2011, the strength of the Lithuanian Armed Forces will stand at 17,120 professional soldiers, conscripts, volunteer servicemen and servicemen of the active reserve, whereof professional servicemen - 8,420, Generals and Admirals – up to 10, Colonels and Naval Captains – up to 42, Lieutenant Colonels and Commanders – up to 140, Majors and Lieutenant Commanders – up to 360, conscripts – up to 2, 000, cadets – up to 200, and volunteer servicemen and servicemen of the active reserve – up to 6,500. In the year 2011, the total ceiling number of civil statute public servants serving in the Lithuanian National Defence System will be set at up 200.
