Baltic Sea to host exercise of Lithuanian, Latvian patrol ships
imgVILNIUS, Aug 17, BNS - The exercise of Lithuanian and Latvian Storm-class patrol ships, Stormex 2007, will be held in Latvian territorial waters and exceptional economic zone. Lithuanian Defense Ministry has reported that a patrol ship of Lithuanian Naval Force called Selis and a crew of 25 people will take part in the exercise that will start on Saturday.
Military and civilian pedestrian trip ”Radvilu keliais" begin
imgOn August 19, Sunday, at 5.00 p.m. the traditional four-day pedestrian trip ”Radvilu keliais" (”Following the roads of Radvilos") was solemnly opened in the Formation square of the Training Regiment.
Lithuanian soldiers help computerise administrative institutions of Ghowr province
imgSoldiers of the Lithuanian-led Ghowr Reconstruction Team (PRT-5) implemented another quick impact project on July 31 by donating a computer set with printer for Ghowr Department of Education. And yesterday two more similar sets were given to the office of provincial governor and one delivered to the Department of National Defence.
Baltic troops gather to Baltic Bikini exercise at Lithuania seacoast
imgTroops from the three Baltic countries have gathered to Baltic Bikini 2007, an exercise in rescuing military aircraft crews at the Lithuanian seacoast. During the exercise that kicked off on Monday, more that 60 servicemen from Lituania, Latvia and Estonia will learn how to escape from the aircraf t after a forced landing on water, will check the ability of airborne personnel to use life-saving arrangements, will talk about the specifics of surviving in water.
New Finnish Defence Attaché accredited
On June 27 at the Black Hall of the National Defence Ministry the new Finland's Defence Attaché Lieutenant Colonel Erkki Juhani Pekonen will be accredited to Lithuania. The former Finnish Defence Attaché in Lithuania Lieutenant Colonel Martti J. Kari will be awarded the National Defence System Medal of Merit for his personal input and assistance in strengthening cooperation of Lithuanian and Finnish armed forces.
Romanian contingent takes over Baltic air policing mission from France
France has surrendered the NATO-sanctioned Baltic air policing mission to a Romanian contingent. An official exchange ceremony took place at the Lithuanian Air Force Aviation Base in Zokniai on Tuesday. The Romanian Air Force has sent a contingent of 67 servicemen with four upgraded MiG 21 Lancers to Lithuania. It will replace the 120 Frenchme n who were guarding the Baltic skies with four supersonic fighters Mirage 2000.
General Manager of the NATO Maintenance and Supply Agency visit Lithuania
On July 25 General Major Karl-Heinz Münzner, General Manager of the NATO Maintenance and Supply Agency, with delegation came on his first visit to Lithuania. During his visit to the National Defence Ministry General Manager of NAMSA met with the MoND State Secretary Jurate Raguckiene, Chief of Defence Staff Brigadier General Vitalijus Vaiksnoras as interim Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, and other top-ranking officials of MoND and Armed Forces' divisions.
Assistance for the Ghowr policemen training has positive effects on the attitude of local inhabitants
imgThis year Lithuania was the first state that received the EU financing under the European Commission programme for enhancement of Afghan provinces in putting into practise law superiority and the principles of proper government. The project ”National Afghan police capabilities strengthening in rural areas of Ghowr" is rated at almost 1.73m Litas. The funding will be used to continue the programme of Ghowr police training and equipping with hardware and facilities that was launched in 2006 under financing of Lithuania.
Opening of the UN Mission in the Ghowr province of Afghanistan - evidence of improving security condition
imgThe United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) opened its office in the Ghowr province where Lithuanian-led PRT is in operation on July 14. UNAMA is an international civil mission operating under the mandate of the United Nations Security Council and coordinating activities of development and expansion in Afghanistan.
International exercise ”Zalgiris 2007" of Young Riflemen and the UK cadets start in Lithuania

On July 16 joint military training ”Zalgiris 2007" of the Lithuanian Riflemen's Union and the Hempshire County of the UK Armed Forces and Cadet Forces of the Isle of Witt begins at the Great Hetman of Lithuania Jonusas Radvila Training Regiment in Rukla. The exercise attended by 140 Lithuanian Young Riflemen and cadets from the UK is organised by the Lithuanian Riflemen's Union. The exercise will be closed on July 26.
