Afghan and Lithuanian military marked historical dates of their homes countries together 2013.02.15
![]() On February 14 military personnel of the 16th shift of the Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT-16) stood in a joint formation with the military of the Afghan National Army (ANA) to mark the dates of two turning points in their countries’ history – the restoration of Lithuania’s independence and the withdrawal of Soviet forces from Afghanistan.
‘Today we celebrate two dates related by their history and the importance to the people of Lithuania and Afghanistan. People of our countries sacrificed their lives to defend their homelands and their independence. Today we can be proud about the past of our nations and the courage of our people”, said Governor of Ghor Sayed Anwar Rahmati as he congratulated the PRT and ANA personnel. The Governor also thanked the PRT for their hard daily efforts in assisting Afghan people to ensure overall security and peace. |

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen will pay a visit to the Ministry of National Defence 2013.01.31
![]() On February 1 NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen who is conducting a formal visit in Lithuania will meet with Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas and other ministerial and military personnel at the Ministry of National Defence.
The NATO Secretary General will join a discussion on NATO’s security policy issues, such as NATO capability development, NATO multinational operations, energy security, NATO’s Air Policing mission in the Baltic States, multinational training events, and other. |

The Minister of National Defence and the Ambassador discussed relevant points in security and defence area, their countries’ contribution to multinational operations and cooperation in military training. Minister J. Olekas presented to the Ambassador the priorities of Lithuania’s EU Presidency and invited Azerbaijan to contribute to the activities of NATO’s Energy Security Centre of Excellence. |

Minister of National Defence discussed Lithuania’s EU Presidency with the UK Ambassador 2013.01.31
![]() On January 31 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas met with Ambassador of the United Kingdom in Lithuania HE David Hunt.
Minister J. Olekas and Ambassador David Hunt expressed their delight about the building defence cooperation, particularly in the areas of the European Union Battlegroups and national navies. The upcoming Lithuania’s Presidency of the Council of European Union was central in the discussion. Minister of National Defence presented Lithuania’s priorities – the Eastern Partnership and energy security, and invited the UK representatives to attend seminars to discuss the areas. |

Baltic Defence Ministers paid tribute to the memory of Latvia’s military 2013.01.29
![]() On January 28 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas, Defence Minister of Latvia Artis Pabriks and Defence Minister of Estonia Urmas Reinsalu who had gathered to attend the Baltic Defence Ministers’ meeting laid flowers at the memorial for the 7th Sigulda Infantry Regiment in Alūksne and later visited the National Armed Forces Infantry School of Latvia.
In the morning of January 29 the formal part of the meeting took place. The Ministers are expected to information on the security situation in the region, relations with neighbouring countries, and to discuss joint projects developed. Lithuanian Minister of Defence Juozas Olekas will present to his Latvian and Estonian counterparts the priorities of Lithuania’s Presidency of the European Council and related events to be held in Lithuania. |

Representatives of the Ministry of National Defence attend bilateral meeting in Moldova 2013.01.29
![]() A bilateral Cooperation Plan 2013 was approved and a new Defence Attaché of the Republic of Lithuania in Moldova, Lieutenant Colonel Mindaugas Kviklys, posted as a result of consultations between representatives of Lithuanian and Moldovan Defence Ministries in Kishinev on January 28–29. Delegation of the Ministry of National Defence was headed by Director of the MOD International Relations and Operations Department Žilvinas Tomkus.
The Cooperation Plan 2013 includes visits of Moldovan officers and military ecology specialists at the General Jonas Žemaitis Lithuanian Military Academy in Vilnius and the General Adolfas Ramanauskas Warfare Training Centre in Nemenčinė. At the visit it was agreed to continue rendering financial support to the studies of Moldovan officers at the Baltic Defence College (BALTDEFCOL). Ministries of Defence of Lithuania and Moldova have been signing cooperation plans annually since 2007. |

On January 29 Baltic Defence Ministers Juozas Olekas (Lithuania), Artis Pabriks (Latvia) and Urmas Reinsalu (Estonia) signed a Memorandum of Understanding while meeting in Gulbene (Latvia). The MoU establishes a new format for trilateral cooperation which is to facilitate implementation of ongoing and prospective cooperation projects.
“The approved agreement on the Baltic cooperation in defence area not only clarifies common areas of interest deserving attention but also paves the way for closer cooperation with the Nordic countries. I do anticipate this document to go beyond the limits of a political agreement and grant tangible practical benefit,” Minister of National Defence J.Olekas said. |

Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas will attend Baltic Defence Ministers’ meeting in Latvia 2013.01.26
![]() On January 28 through 29 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas will meet with Defence Minister of Latvia Artis Pabriks and Defence Minister of Estonia Urmas Reinsalu in Gulbene (Latvia). The Ministers will discuss defence cooperation of the Baltic States and relevant NATO and regional security issues. The meeting is expected to be concluded by endorsing a new agreement on the trilateral Baltic defence cooperation.

![]() On January 24 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas met with the Ambassador of Austria, HE Dr. Helmut Koller. At the meeting the Lithuanian Minister introduced to the Ambassador Lithuania’s priorities of the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union –development of energy security and the Eastern Partnership policy, and the main events in the Common Security and Defence Policy area during the period of Lithuania’s Presidency.
