Minister of National Defence met with the new Ambassador of Austria in Lithuania


On September 23 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas met with recently appointed Ambassador of Austria in Lithuania Dr. Johann Spitzer.


At the meeting Minister J.Olekas presented to the Ambassador the course and priorities of Lithuania’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union, i.e. enhancement of energy security and further development of the Eastern Partnership.


The Minister and the Ambassador of Austria also exchanged views on the EU Training Mission in Mali (EUTM), Minister J.Olekas presented to Ambassador Dr. Johann Spitzer Lithuania’s plans of contributing to multinational operations in the nearest future.


The Ministry of National Defence in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Defence and Sports of Austria, the European Security and Defence College and the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine are planning to arrange training on the EU Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) for representatives of the Eastern Partnership countries during the Lithuanian term of the EU Presidency.


The courses planned to take place in 2013–2014 will be three-fold to include: distance e-learning module, a CSDP Orientation Course in Brussels and a seminar in Kiev.


Lithuanian Minister J.Olekas expressed his delight to the Ambassador of Austria about the successful cooperation developed between the General Jonas Žemaitis Lithuanian Military Academy and the Theresianische Militärakademie of Austria in student exchange. Last year one cadet of the Lithuanian Military Academy studied at the Theresianische Militärakademie while the Lithuanian Military Academy has provided training for two Austrian cadets this year. The Minister also said he hoped that the two military education institutions would conduct teacher exchange programs in the future.
