Troops welcomed home after mission in Afghanistan


On September 16 a formal homecoming and decoration ceremony took place in Vilnius for the Lithuanian military who have just returned from the multinational mission in Afghanistan where they were serving as the Protection Team of the Head of the Lithuanian Special Mission and the teams providing training for helicopter pilots of the Afghan National Security Forces. Their successful completion of the mission was recognised by the National Defence System Medals for Deployment on International Missions and citations.


Vice Minister of National Defence Marijus Velička, Chief of the Joint Staff of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Brigadier General Vilmantas Tamošaitis, and Commander of the Military Police Lieutenant Colonel Gytis Kazokas formally welcomed members of the Protection Team of the Head of the Lithuanian Special Mission at the Ministry of National Defence. Military Police personnel turned out in considerable numbers to greet their colleagues as well.


Troops of the 5th rotation of the Lithuanian-led Air Mentoring Team (AMT-5) were formally met at the Air Base of the Lithuanian Air Force in Šiauliai by Commander of the Lithuanian Air Force Major General Edvardas Mažeikis, LITHAF leadership and representatives, families of the troops and other guests.


Lithuanian Special Operations Squadron deployed in the south of Afghanistan, Air Mentoring Team which trains Afghan helicopter pilots, National Support Element rendering logistic support to Lithuanian military deployed in the country, Lithuanian officers serving at NATO Headquarters, and the Protection Team of the Head of the Lithuanian Special Mission continues Lithuania’s involvement in the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) mission after the withdrawal of Lithuanian national military capabilities from the province of Ghor.
