NASAMS medium-range air defence system officially handed over to the Lithuanian Armed Forces

NASAMS medium-range air defence systems has been officially handed over to the Lithuanian Armed Forces. Representatives of the National Defence System and Kongsberg, Norwegian manufacturer of NASAMS, signed a document certifying good testing results of the system on October 30 at the Lithuanian Armed Forces Air Defence Battalion. On that moment Lithuania became a full-fledged owner of the systems that had been delivered to the Air Defence Battalion from Norway in the summer this year.

“An Alliance-wide growth of defence spending is increasing for the sixth consecutive year. That not only demonstrates NATO unity but also outlines a clear perspective of the Alliance: further strengthening of deterrence and collective defence and more readiness to respond to changing threats, Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis said on the first day of virtual NATO Defence Ministers meeting. The event focused on fairer burden sharing and enhancing deterrence and defence.

On October 20-22 authorities and companies of private and public sectors are training at national level cyber defence exercise Cyber Shield 2020 co-organised by the National Cyber Security Centre under the Ministry of National Defence and Kaunas University of Technology.

Lithuania to host the European Cybersecurity Competence Centre in Vilnius

October 21, the Government has agreed to a proposal from four Ministries (National Defence, Foreign Affair, Transport and Communications, and Economy and Innovation) to apply for becoming the host of the European Cybersecurity Competence Centre (ECCC). The ECCC would become the principal instrument of the European Union to promote European cybersecurity initiatives and develop cybersecurity research and technology. Negotiations on the regulation of establishment are still in progress at the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament, the new EU body is expected to become operational next year.

Shipment of 142 brand new Unimog trucks transferred to the Lithuanian Armed Forces

October 21, 142 brand-new five-ton capacity Unimog U5000S trucks have been transferred to the Lithuanian Armed Forces. In total, 340 trucks of such a type have been handed over with the present shipment. The trucks from German manufacturer Daimler AG are acquired to keep the vehicle fleet in the Lithuanian Armed Forces updated and uniform. The new trucks will replace outdated UNIMOG vehicles, manufactured by Daimler AG as well.

On October 19 Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis met with Estonia’s new Ambassador to Lithuania Kai Kaarelson, congratulated her on the appointment, and expressed delight about the longstanding and strong cooperation between Lithuania and Estonia in the area of security and defence. Minister and Ambassador both agreed that it was necessary to retain NATO attention to deterrence and collective defence and discussed NATO enhanced Forward Presence in the Baltic states in considerable detail.

Lithuania and Germany further steps up cooperation in military training

Lithuania’s and Germany’s cooperation on military training will intensify. It has been provided for in an agreement extension on cooperation in the area of military training by the Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania and the Federal Ministry of Defence of Germany. The amendment to the bilateral document was signed on October 14 by Head of the International Relations and Operations Group Karolis Aleksa on behalf of the Ministry of National Defence and Defence Attaché of Germany LT Col Konstantin Bellini on Behalf of the Federal Ministry of Defence.

Lithuania to continue force contributions to multinational rapid response forces, NATO and EU headquarters

In 2021-2022 military and civilian personnel of Lithuania will continue completing standby periods for multinational rapid response forces – the NATO Response Force (NRF) and the UK-led Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), and serving with military commands of NATO and the EU. It was tabled for approval of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania in a Ministry of National Defence draft resolution on October 15.
