Vice Minister V. Semeška discussed implementation of joint Lithuanian-U.S. infrastructure development projects in Lithuania

On February 25 Vice Minister of National Defence Vilius Semeška met with representatives of the Office of Defence Cooperation of the U.S. Embassy in Lithuania to discuss jointly conducted infrastructure development projects that contribute to the improvement of training and living conditions of not only Lithuanian troops but of U.S. and other allies’ forces in Lithuania.

On February 25 Minister of National Defence Arvydas Anušauskas took part in the roundtable discussion organised by the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Parliament on “Brexit: Challenges and Opportunities for Lithuania”. Minister expressed his views on further cooperation with the UK in the area of security and defence.

The population of Lithuania have confidence in the Lithuanian Armed Forces and are favourable to it, they have a very positive view on the presence of NATO allies in the country and welcome the increase of the national defence budget, shows a public opinion poll carried out by request of the Ministry of National Defence in December 2020 by Spinter Research, market and public opinion research company.

On February 15 – 21 fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were scrambled four times to identify and escort military aircraft of the Russian Federation in the international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

On February 22 Minister of National Defence Arvydas Anušauskas reiterated Lithuania’s support to Ukraine’s ongoing reform and the Euro-Atlantic integration aspiration at a distance meeting of the Ministers of Defence of the QUINT format, countries that support Ukraine’s reform – the U.S., UK, Canada, Poland, and Lithuania – with the Minister of Defence of Ukraine, Andrii Taran.

The Ministry of National Defence and the U.S. Department of Defence have started  cooperation in the field of radiological environmental monitoring. Transportable monitoring equipment have been delivered to the General Silvestras Žukauskas Training Area of the Lithuanian Armed Forces in Pabradė earlier this month. Once installed, it  will be used to measure changes in the  levels of radionuclide background in the atmosphere.

Key priorities of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania for cyber security are the following: to ensure effectively cyber security of critical information resources managers, to strengthen the resilience of cyberspace, to prevent the spread of technologies from unreliable manufacturers, and to complete the consolidation of national cyber capabilities. The priorities were presented on February 19 by Vice Minister of National Defence Margiris Abukevičius in a remote meeting of the Cyber Security Council of Lithuania.

Minister of National Defence Arvydas Anušauskas is attending the NATO Defence Ministers Meeting held on February 17 –18 to address NATO‘s most topical issues. In the session of February 17 the NATO Ministers focussed on enhancing NATO deterrence and defence and fairer burden sharing.
