Lithuania begins troop withdrawal from Afghanistan alongside its allies

As it has been agreed by NATO allies to start the withdrawal of troops from Operation Resolute Support in Afghanistan on May 1, the Lithuanian Armed Forces is beginning to pull out military personnel. Just like all the NATO allies, Lithuania will apply every precaution necessary in the process. Information on concrete numbers of returning troops or dates of redeployment will not be publicly available in the course of withdrawal.

On April 30 Vice Minister of National Defence Margiris Abukevičius discussed cooperation on strengthening capabilities in order to counter the Russian and Chinese activities in cyberspace with had a video call with U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Cyber Policy Mieke Eoyang.

Lithuanian-German agreement on stay of military force members

On April 29 the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania ratified the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Lithuania and the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany concerning Temporary Stays of Members of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Lithuania and the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Territory of the Other State. The document lays out terms for temporary stay of troops of armed forces of Germany and Lithuania deployed in each other’s territories for training and exercises, transiting Lithuania’s land territory. The agreement also defines terms for humanitarian assistance and search and rescue operations.

Defence Attaché of Croatia in Lithuania Col Jugoslav Jozić was farewelled at a ceremony at the Ministry of National Defence today. Vice Minister of National Defence Margiris Abukevičius praised the strengthened bilateral cooperation between Lithuania and Croatia at the event.

Minister of National Defence Arvydas Anušauskas took part in a distance meeting of the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) Defence Ministers on April 28. At the meeting UK Secretary of State for Defence Ben Wallace briefed the Ministers on the recently published Integrated Review, a strategic publication of the United Kingdom, the JEF Ministers of Defence were informed about the situation in Ukraine. This was the first time Iceland, a new partner nation of the JEF, was represented at the meeting.

On April 23 Minister of National Defence Arvydas Anušauskas paid a visit to Riga where he met with his Latvian counterpart, Minister of Defence Artis Pabriks. The Ministers discussed the Baltic cooperation and coordination of actions in NATO and EU formats. When addressing regional security, they discussed the Russian provocations on the Ukrainian border and in the annexed Crimea, and the strategic partnership of Russia and Belarus.
