New Defence Attaché of Canada accredited to Lithuania

Next Defence Attaché of Canada Col Earl Vandahl was accredited to Lithuania Monday at the Ministry of National Defence. Vice Minister of National Defence Margiris Abukevičius welcomed him to the position saying that the recently strengthened cooperation between Lithuania and Canada will become even closer in the future.

At the informal Defence Ministers’ meeting in Lisbon, Minister of National Defence Arvydas Anušauskas stressed that the deteriorating security situation in the Eastern neighborhood underlines the need for the West to strengthen NATO and EU contacts at different levels and coordination of routine activities. Minister also underscored Lithuania’s readiness to show initiative for assembling EU involvement in order to enhance Ukraine’s defensive capacity.

Minister of National Defence Arvydas Anušauskas presented Lithuania’s position in a discussion over the actions of Alexander Lukashenko’s regime in the European Union Defence Ministers’ meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Lisbon. A. Anušauskas urged the Allies to maintain vigilance: according to Minister, Belarus will follow the pattern of aggressive behaviour in the future as well.

They will stay in Lithuania on May 28–31, and observe Exercise Iron Wolf 2021 I on May 29 at Gaižiūnai Training Area.

May 25, Vice Minister of National Defence Vilius Semeška with Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lt Gen Valdemaras Rupšys visited the Mechanized Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf to meet with allied troops of the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group and learn about the passage of international Exercise Iron Wolf 2021 I. Vice Minister called the international exercise held by the Lithuanian Armed Forces with Lithuania’s allies on May 19–31 a factor that strengthened the deterrence.

May 25, the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania approved laws amending and supplementing the Law on Electronic Communications and the Law on the Protection of Objects of Importance to Ensuring National Security to ensure that only trusted manufacturers and suppliers will be allowed to provide the fifth generation (5G) mobile network infrastructure when it is introduced in Lithuania.
